Planning a date is always a little nerve-wracking. It’s a bit easier if you’re going out at night – grabbing dinner and drinks is fairly standard. But what about during the day? Sometimes, because of different schedules or prior commitments, the only time you two can hang out is in the daytime. You may be wondering what can you do that’s fun and not crazy expensive. The good news is there’s actually quite a lot throughout Buffalo.
To make sure you have a kickass date, we planned out a three-stop day just for you. These activities will guarantee you not only have fun and laugh but that you also get to know each other better – because, you know, that’s kind of the whole point.
We’ll be putting together guides for several neighborhoods throughout Western New York. First up: Downtown.
A great way to break the ice with someone is doing something festive, enjoyable and perhaps a little outside both your comfort zones. So, the first stop of your day is ice skating at Canalside. Not only is it a great activity to get your heart rate up, but you’ll also be so focused on not falling over that any nerves you may have are bound to go away – no awkward silences here! Consider this permission to get comfortable and even act a bit silly.
Admission to the rink at Canalside is $6 per person and $5 for skate rentals. Check out the calendar to see the hours, which vary depending on the day and weather.
After all that falling, you’re going to need some grub. The great thing about Buffalo is the wide array of delicious food options to choose from, particularly in the downtown area. We recommend heading up to Ellicott Street because of the huge variety of cuisines you’ll find here. You’re bound to find something you can easily agree on including bar food, Mexican, Italian, sushi, Southern, the list goes on.
Bond over a tray of nachos at Deep South Taco, which opens at 11:30 a.m. every day. Or hop on over to Tappo for some Italian sandwiches and entrees, which serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. If you’re both in need of some comfort food and a beer, stop into Big Ditch Brewing, which opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday and 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Interested in more of a dive bar atmosphere? We recommend Eddie Bradys.
Each are delicious for their own reasons and will help warm you up after being in the cold outside.
Get Personal at Old Editions Bookshop & Cafe
Now, call us crazy but the whole point of this date is so you can get to know the other person better, right? Well, you can tell a lot about a person by their likes and dislikes in regards to books. Everyone has read something that changed or impacted them…or something that made them swear off reading altogether. So, your final stop is Old Editions Bookshop & Cafe located at 74 E. Huron St.
As you mosey through the bookshop, go on a quest to each to find your favorite and least favorite books. Get ready for some passionate discussions and to really learn more about your date.
The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. so stop in for an adventure. Not only will you get to know the person you’re seeing on a deeper level but you’ll also be shopping local – a win-win in our book.
