When it comes to fall festivities in WNY, a popular attraction is the World Pumpkin Weigh Off at The Great Pumpkin Farm. Growing your own pumpkin can be hard enough but trying to break a record for the heaviest pumpkin surely can’t be easy.

Well, retired farmer, Scott Andrusz of Lancaster knows a thing or two when it comes to growing a massive pumpkin. In an article from the Gothamist, he states, “Give it all the best stuff you can think of to give it, all the fertilizer, kelp worm castings, chicken refuse, and a ton of water every time she’s thirsty you gotta go give her a drink.”

Upon weighing Andrusz’s pumpkin, it not only broke the record for heaviest pumpkin in New York State, but coming in at an enormous 2,554 pounds, it set a new record for heaviest pumpkin in North America.

However, this North American title was short lived. Just about a week later, a pumpkin in Anoka, Minnesota ended up weighing in at 2,560 claiming the new title of heaviest pumpkin in North America.

So where does Andrusz’s pumpkin stack up against others in the world? According to the official list from Backyard Gardener, it ranks in 6th place among the top 10 heaviest pumpkins in the world, with the world record being held by a 2702.8 pound pumpkin at the Big Pumpkin Festival in Peccioli, Italy in 2021.

Andrusz’s has a little ways to go to beat that record but for now, we’re proud to say a fellow WNYer holds the record for NYS!
