Flan has a bit of a bad rep in the eyes of dessert lovers out there.  For SOME reason it’s generally less appealing than a nice big piece of triple chocolate cake or salted caramel anything, but Flan for the Lovers + Haters ($10) at Aro Bar de Tapas might just change your outlook on this Spanish, pudding-ish dessert made with vanilla, more vanilla, custard, and caramel syrup.  I made the mistake of following Aro Bar de Tapas on Instagram, along with their Pastry Chef Monica Kollig. Big mistake, friends, big mistake. Do so, and you’ll find yourself asking why Apple hasn’t invented some Willy Wonka type phone where you can reach in and grab the dessert, from plate to phone to belly that’s what I’m talking about. 

On my last visit, I enjoyed a variety of tapas, eventually realizing that each dish tasted even better than their Instagram counterparts, which is saying something. After a table full of tasty nosh we dove into the acclaimed dessert menu, with Flan for Lovers + Haters at the top of the list.  Presented to us covered in edible flowers, it was molded into a beautiful, almost deconstructed and then reconstructed design, clearly made with love, from Pastry Chef Monica.
Unlike the spongy, odd texture I expected I was pleasantly surprised with my first creamy, sweet bite.  The dish, served cold, has a smooth flavor offering the perfect amount of sweetness. One of Aro’s signature gin drinks, The Violet Beauregard ($14) made up of magellan blue gin, micro-violet, grated nutmeg, orange peel, and fever tree Mediterranean makes a great pairing.  Needless to say, it’s almost guaranteed you’ll leave your dining experience at Aro feeling truly special.
