Nothing hits better than a gorgeous WNY sunset. Add some warm weather to the mix and you can enjoy cotton candy skies and even orange and purple hues almost every night. Our sunsets are truly some of the best on the east coast with a perfectly placed great lake to the west of WNY. As one of Buffalo’s most popular sights, we thought it was only right to dedicate an entire guide to the best sunset views around town.
Most of these places have walking or hiking trails too, so you might want to consider visiting during the day, for the evening, or just to catch an epic sunset. This list is broken down by location so you can base it off of where you are or where you want to go. Plus, it’s not all nature spots on this guide – scroll for beaches and rooftop bars too!
Pro tip: Remember to be extra careful in more heavily wooded spots and check all rules and guidelines before you visit. Additionally, some locations may close at dusk so keep an eye on your apple watch.
As always, please remember to leave no trace on your nature excursions!
1. Wilkeson Pointe
As seen on Instagram this is an incredible view for a sunset situated at the Outer Harbor. It simultaneously makes a great insta background.
2. Buffalo Harbor State Park
This one is a little farther out on the waterfront, but. a gorgeous view nonetheless. A clear waterfront view for a lovely sunset.
3. Tifft Nature Preserve
If you’re looking for a hike and sunset watch this is the spot. Find a good spot in between the trees and relax in the wooded environment.
4. Erie Basin Marina (and Observation Deck)
This one is a popular pick, but if you’re looking for a pro-tip, go to the top of the observation deck. It is higher up, unobstructed and truly one of the best views on the waterfront.
A classic choice here, but not to go unappreciated. Walking along Canalside with ice cream and a sunset sounds like the perfect summer evening. Another pro-tip, you can eat out on the Liberty Hound outdoor deck during sunset too.
6. Japanese Gardens at Buffalo History Museum
The Japanese Gardens are stunning well past their blooming season. This is a great spot to really relax and take in the views.
7. Hoyt Lake
We can’t not talk about how beautiful Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park is. Go for a walk, bring a blanket, and camp out for a great sunset viewing experience.
8. Broderick Park
Right on Niagara River, this park recently underwent renovations. Fresh for walking and sunset watching, it’s a great view of the river.
9. Bird Island Pier
The pier is a break wall between the Niagara River and the Black Rock Canal, you can get a more “on” the water view here.
10. The Bell Slip
Part of the Outer Harbor waterfront area, this part of the park offers a quieter, more zen spot to sit relax and watch the sun setting.
11. Grand Island Lookout Bridge
A gorgeous view of the Grand Island bridges? Yes, please.
12. Buckhorn Island State Park
This spot is a bit more of a marsh water overlook. It has winding waters and an amazing view.
13. Knox Farm State Park
A state park, dog park, and a farm setting all in one. This park has so many spots to chill out and wait for the sunset. You can get a great view almost anywhere, both of the sunset and the area itself. Plus: it’s a super popular picture spot.
14. Mill Road Scenic Overlook
Looking for a quicker stop? This scenic overlook has a great higher-up, panoramic view and is the perfect small spot to catch that gorgeous sunset.
15. Niawanda Park
The Niagara River will never do us wrong. Stop for ice cream and start walking; stop on a bench and enjoy.

19. Como Lake Park
A gorgeous park around the lake, the sun will set just over it.
20. Trailhead Niagara Gorge Hiking Trail
The Gorge can be a little tricky at dusk so definitely be careful with this spot. If you can get yourself a nice lookout spot not too far from where you parked, you can get a breathtaking view over the river that flows through.
21. Niagara Falls State Park
There is nothing like Niagara Falls, but at sunset, it doesn’t get more breathtaking than that. You can even get views of Canada (we miss it dearly).
